What WayFinder is
WayFinder is a supplementary, camera-based navigation aid for blind and low-vision people. You point the camera, ask a question or start an analysis, and the app speaks a description of the scene. The description is produced by a third-party AI service (Google Gemini) from one still photo.
What WayFinder is not
- Not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, or monitor any condition.
- Not an emergency service. It cannot call for help and must not be used in place of emergency services.
- Not a replacement for a white cane, a guide dog, orientation and mobility skills, human assistance, or your own judgement.
- Not a guarantee of safety. It cannot detect every hazard and must not be treated as proof that a path is clear.
How the AI can be wrong
- It can miss a hazard — a step down, a hole, traffic, a moving object, an overhead obstacle, a wet floor — and describe the scene as if it were not there.
- It can misidentify what it sees — call a staircase a ramp, call a moving vehicle a parked one.
- It can be delayed. A late answer is no answer; if you have already moved, it describes where you were, not where you are.
- It can be unavailable — provider failure, no connection, quota reached. The app says so and tells you to stop.
- It can be incomplete. The model sees a single frame; it does not hear traffic, sense slope, or feel a curb.
Rules of use
- Keep using a white cane, guide dog, orientation and mobility skills, human assistance, and your own judgement at all times.
- Do not cross streets, enter traffic, or navigate stairs based solely on WayFinder output.
- Do not use WayFinder as a replacement for emergency services.
- Stop when the app says it cannot see or cannot verify a scene. A "cannot see" answer is authoritative; an older answer is not.
- Do not act on an old answer. WayFinder keeps the facts from your last analysis for at most 30 seconds, only to answer a follow-up question about the same scene, and it never presents them as a fresh look. If you have moved, ask again.
What happens when WayFinder cannot see
When the provider fails, the network fails, the camera is unusable, or the model returns a result that the backend cannot trust, WayFinder fails closed: it tells you to stop. It never guesses, never replays a previous "clear" verdict, and never lets a stale answer through as if it were current.
Lifetime analysis quota
Each account receives exactly 25 successful Gemini visual analyses. There is no paid extension, no reset path, and no subscription. When the limit is reached, the backend refuses further AI calls before contacting Gemini and tells you to stop.
